What Is Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumor affecting the mesothelium, the membrane surrounding most internal organs. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura (membrane lining the lungs) or peritoneum (lining of the abdomen).

Benin mesothelioma can also be called a fibroma and mesothelioma cancer is also known as malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma may also be named after where it occurs. For example, cancer of malignant pleural mesothelioma, which begins in the lining around the lungs.

Most people who develop malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. Benin Mesothelioma does not seem related to asbestos exposure.
